First Grade Curriculum

First grade is a very important year in your child's life!  This is the year when most children learn how to read.  The emphasis in first grade remains firmly on developing your child’s reading and math skills.  I focus most of my attention and teaching toward getting your child to read well by the time they leave first grade. Your child should be reading on the DRA level 16 by June to graduate to second grade.

DRA stands for Developmental Reading Assessment.  This is an assessment that we use in our school to show the progress of each child in their reading.  I usually give each student a DRA assessment four times a year, once in every marking period.  I monitor each child closely, so that if I feel that they are not making adequate progress, we can get them the help they need to succeed before it is too late.  The most important thing is for your child to feel a sense of success and accomplishment.  By working together, we can help your child to achieve this!
